Building collapses, injures Mumbai | The world

A building collapsed in Mumbai, India, killing 11 people and injuring seven others. The French news agency reported that eight of the victims were children.

A three-storey building collapsed Wednesday night (9) in a poor part of the city, the country’s financial and entertainment capital. Rescue teams are searching for survivors.

A 30-year-old woman among the injured has been admitted to hospital in critical condition. As a precaution the occupants of nearby buildings were evicted from their homes.

Mohammad Rafiq Siddiqui said he lost 9 relatives. “I left home at 10:30 pm to fetch milk. When I returned home, the building collapsed,” Siddiqui told Reuters.

On Wednesday, the first day of heavy rains in Mumbai, monsoon rains lashed the west coast of India.

Building collapses are common in the country during the rainy season, which runs from June to September, and heavy rains weaken the foundations of poorly constructed structures.

In 2019, a three-storey building collapsed, killing 14 people in a mountainous area in the northern Indian city of Solan.

That same year, a four-storey building collapsed in Mumbai, killing 10 people.
