The U.S. government is investigating a series of health incidents involving its diplomats and other executives in the Austrian capital, Vienna.
More than 20 employees reported similar symptoms Havana Syndrome – A mysterious brain disease – Since President Joe Biden took office in January.
There is no explanation for this syndrome, but U.S. scientists say it could be caused by targeted microwave radiation.
It was first reported in Cuba in 2016 and 2017.
The U.S. and Canadian ambassadors in Havana complained of symptoms described by dizziness, loss of balance, deafness and anxiety as the first “cognitive fog”.
The United States has accused Cuba of carrying out “sonic attacks,” but the Caribbean has vehemently denied the allegations. The incident escalated tensions between the two countries.
A 2019 U.S. academic study found that sick diplomats had “brain abnormalities,” but Cuba rejected that report.
“For some patients, a sudden loud noise (…) may start in one or both ears, around a wide area of the head, and in some cases, with a feeling of pressure. Explains the report prepared by the American Academy of Sciences after an investigation appointed by the Department.
After reviewing the cases, the Academy concluded that “direct and pulsating radiation frequency energy” (a type of radiation involving microwaves) was the most reliable explanation for the disease, although other causes could not be completely ruled out.
The report did not name the perpetrators of the radiation, although it did suggest that it may have been intentional, as it was a more vibrant expression than a sequel. However, the official conclusion is that “no hypothesis has been proven and the circumstances are not clear.”
The Vienna cases first appeared in a New Yorker press release on Friday, which was later confirmed by the US State Department, which said it was “seriously investigating”.
Reuters quoted a statement from the Austrian Foreign Ministry as saying, “We are going to the bottom of this in collaboration with US officials.”
Vienna has long been a center of diplomatic activity and has a reputation as a center of intelligence, especially during the Cold War.
Countries like the United States have a large diplomatic presence in the city.
The city is currently in indirect talks between Iran and the United States over efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear deal.
Cases of the disease have been reported in other parts of the world, but U.S. officials say Vienna has more cities than Havana.
In June, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced a comprehensive study of the causes of the disease.
