A Death It is one of man’s greatest dilemmas. Physical death is, most of the time, painful, with the possibility of being ominous, mysterious and suspicious of being an end point or a passage beyond life. But it’s not for everyone: those who have experienced it Near-death experiences Or psychedelics, chemicals that gave them a sense of peace about the end of life.

The discovery was published in a paper by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Maryland, USA. Plus one, this Wednesday (24/8). A study of 3,192 people who had these kinds of experiences showed that a large percentage of the interviewees had some kind of revelation about the meaning and purpose of life.

For the analysis, the researchers distributed an invitation to people who had lived through the experiences, including classified ads, company newsletters, blog posts and social media – including near-death or psychedelic drug user groups – and invitations via email. Mail to people who refer them.

The applicants were divided into two groups: one of those near death without using a chemical substance (933 respondents) and one of those with psychedelic experiences (2,259 analyzed) – near death – drug use, including lysergic acid diethylamide. (LSD), psilocybin, ayahuasca or N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT).

For nearly 90% of respondents, the experience reduced their fear of death and resulted in positive end-of-life changes such as personal well-being or satisfaction. In the group of people who had a drug-free experience, there was 88% and 89% confirmation in the psychedelic use group.

In addition, the majority of both groups were shown to find personal, spiritual or “psychological intelligence” meaning after the experience, the report said. About 56% of the drug-experienced group said they had discovered “something or someone they could call God,” compared to 48% of the drug-free group. However, the group that did not use psychedelics had a higher incidence of “contact with the dead.”

According to the study’s lead author, Roland Griffiths, the research reveals that the clinical use of psychedelics can help treat mood swings and help people with end-of-life anxiety — in terminal cases or during panic attacks. With an obvious factor in the fear of dying.

“The characteristics of psychedelic experiences are not the same as those of near-death experiences, both rank among the most important life experiences, and both produce similar lasting decreases in fear of death and increases in well-being.”
Specific questionnaires analyzed the feelings of the experience and its results

Each group responded to a specific questionnaire developed by the researchers with multiple-choice questions to describe the duration of the experience and whether or not they were life-threatening, thus detailing the experience and context. .

Multiple-choice questions are based on cognitive, affective, psychic, and transcendental subscales. He first assessed the extent to which time perception and thoughts were accelerated, even if scenes from the past were recalled and suddenly seemed to “make sense of it all.”

In the affected area, questions assessed the appearance of feelings of peace/joy/union and the sensation of bright light. In occultism, questions are evaluated if the senses are more vivid than usual, if they seem to be aware of things according to external perception, if they experience visions from the future and feel separated from the physical body.

Finally, questions on the transcendental subscale asked respondents whether they had encountered a mystical being or presence, seen spirits of the dead, or seen a boundary or point of no return.

The change in the attitude towards death was analyzed in other questions, in which the analyzed people “the prospect of my own death arouses anxiety in me”, to assess the fear of death, “death is a gateway to ultimate satisfaction” , to assess the level of satisfaction at the end of life and if they feel a sense of purpose.
