The man boarded the wrong plane and realized the mistake just before takeoff

A man traveling home from two weeks in Turkey ended up flying to the wrong destination. Matt Hodgetts, 56, only realized the mistake when he was commenting to other passengers and realized they were going to Gatwick Airport on the outskirts of London, not Birmingham. Destinations are 220 km apart.

The man told British tabloid The Sun how the misunderstanding happened. “I crossed the bridge, went to the plane, showed my boarding pass and sat down,” says he, who works as a driver.

“I said, ‘I can’t wait to get back to Birmingham.’ People started laughing, ‘You listen to Gatwick?’

He added that after a security check, he was told to “go ahead” and was not questioned by an airline employee who checked his boarding pass before boarding the wrong flight.

When he realized his mistake, Matt frantically called a waitress and explained the situation. He had to wait for about 15 minutes for the flight to change as the flight had already started its process of leaving the boarding gate.

In a statement released after the incident, EasyJet said the situation was quickly resolved and apologized for the error. “Once the error was realized, the passenger was transferred to the correct flight that boarded at the same gate at the same time prior to departure and we apologize for any inconvenience.”
