US announces measures to curb Venezuelan immigration

Legal entry into the country will require background screening and full vaccination; Mexico will also be active in this study

Department of Homeland Security America On Wednesday (12.Oct.2022) new measures to control the arrival of illegal Venezuelan immigrants were announced.

According to the US department, new immigration checkpoints will be established along the border with Mexico and more police will be redeployed to the area. Here it is Just like that of report (127 KB, in English).

“These actions make it clear that there is a legal and orderly way for Venezuelans to enter the United States, and that legal entry is the only way.” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas said.

“Those who follow the legal process will be able to travel safely to the United States and be eligible to work here.”he said.

Venezuelans will be considered ineligible in the following cases:

  • Have been deported from the United States within the previous 5 years;
  • Passed ports of entry without permission after the date of notification (October 12);
  • irregularly entered Mexico or Panama after the notification date;
  • Permanent residents or dual citizens of any country other than Venezuela;
  • Currently have refugee status in any country;
  • Vaccinations and other public health requirements are not met.

In August, 12% of illegal immigrants in Venezuela crossed the border into Mexico.

With the new measures taking effect immediately, 24,000 Venezuelans are expected to legally immigrate to the United States by air.

According to the US government, Venezuelans are eligible for legal immigration if:

  • Have a sponsor providing assistance in the United States;
  • biometric and biographical screening and authorization for national security and public safety;
  • Meet all vaccinations and general health requirements.
