One rainy night, Emma Jane Kidd is surprised to find three puppies of a mysterious animal in her dog Merlin’s bed. This fact happened three weeks ago in Australia, and caused repercussions in the local press.
The Australian was surprised by what had happened, but soon recognized that the babies were the pups of southern brown bandicoots, a marsupial species also known as cuenda, native to the southwest and south of the country.
According to Merlin’s owner, the puppies were scared and found the dog bed a warm and safe place. A mother runs away, leaving her children alone in fear of the presence of Emma and her pet.
So Kitt called the Darling Range Wildlife Shelter, an organization that rescues and cares for wild animals. Rescuers who arrived at the scene were shocked to find children sheltering in an apartment.
“These animals usually live in backyards and local forests. It’s not unusual for you mountain dwellers to see them. But a dog nesting on a porch is very unusual,” a representative from the Darling Range Wildlife Sanctuary told The Dodo. .
No FacebookThe shelter released information about the children to create awareness about what to do in such cases.
“They are not dogs. The triplets are now in our care and we hope they grow up beautiful and healthy. The animals should be taken to licensed wildlife rehabilitators as soon as possible and will not be cared for by the public.”
Cubs remain at the shelter until they are large enough to survive on their own, at which point they are released back into the wild.
